The year 1941 was a turning point for the world, but long-time Shanghai resident Ruth Hill Barr had no way of knowing that when she started her five-year diary on January 1st. Before the year was over, the Japanese Army had occupied Shanghai's International Settlement, and she and her family were stranded as enemy aliens, soon to be placed in a Japanese internment camp. This book includes the full text of Ruth’s diary along with explanations and memories by her daughter Betty, revealing with fascinating detail the anguish and, incredibly, the continuity of life inside and outside the Shanghai camps during the war.

Ruth Record The Diary of an American in Japaneseoccupied Shanghai 194145 China History eBook Ruth Barr

“Ruth’s Record” is a fascinating read for anyone who is interested in personal story, WW II, Shanghai, or how civilians have fared during war and political upheaval. It almost seems as if it is an unintentional cautionary story about how the normal can so quickly change to a totally different existence.

Ruth’s diary mentions specific books, plays, concerts, films, lectures (before and during internment) as well as dinners, “tiffins”, bridge games (and names of guests or hosts), and activities that occurred almost daily. What an intellectual and energetic life is recorded in the 5-year diary!

Since Ruth and my aunt were very dear friends, I must confess to an additional bias.

Dearest Betty, Please contact me ASAP. You were so kind as to help me navigate in and around PVG in order to find Lunghua, the camp my mother lived in with her mother. It was "D" Block.

Ruth Barr‘s diaries of the Japanese occupation - especially the life in Longhua camp - are concise day by day accounts of life in Shanghai for foreign nationals from allied nations during WWII. While that doesn’t sound exciting, if you have any interest at all in Chinese history - especially that of Shanghai - this book will fill in quite a few blanks. The very fact that the subject matter is not glamorous nor the diaries written in flowing prose makes it such an interesting historical document.
Her daughter, Betty Barr Wang, has done a very good job of providing readers with a short summary ahead of each new year‘s diary entries that help keeping all the minutiae in perspective. Having the good fortune of knowing Betty, it is my educated guess that the discreet and capable editing she has done on her mother‘s diaries and notebooks owes a lot to her previous occupation as a college teacher of English.
