Among the problems the world faces today, I consider the three E's Energy, Environment, and Education to be my mission to solve. This book is my answer to these problems. I survey as much as I can the nature of energy. I focus on inventions since antiquity to collect, store, convert, and use energy. Many of the inventions described are mine, put in the context of a proposed paradigm shift that I call personal energy.
Personal energy focuses on human needs in 6 areas water, electricity, environment, food, information, and transportation. We should live comfortable, yet sustainable. My goal is to reverse the Thomas Edison centralized model of power generation and distribution, to be replaced by local collection, storage, conversion, and use of energy. The energy source should be primarily renewable, assisted by fossil fuel as a backup energy supply. We cannot keep trashing up the earth.
I tell the story from the point of view of scientists and engineers. I focus on their purposes. Science comes from a love of nature. Engineering comes from a love of mankind to solve their daily problems.
I wrote this book for our young people. They are our best hope to improve our world in the 3 E's. I want them to learn for 5 reasons curiosity about the world, fun of learning, faith in their ability to reason and invent, love of mankind by helping people through innovation, and a pursuit of the infinity and beyond.
This book is full of stories of famous scientists and engineers. Their ideas are explained in simple English. Each topic is laid out on 2 pages in full view. Each topic has a simple equation such as F=Ma, made easy to understand with a numerical example. I use plenty of big colorful pictures.

What The Matter With Energy A story of space time matter energy and energy conversion Joseph Hui
In the Modern world almost everything we consume comes from far away centralized facilities. This creates complicated networks, open to disruption, and adding costs for every layer involved and every mile a product travels to a consumer. In the case of energy consumers pay to build and maintain power generation facilities and massive distribution networks. The further electricity travels the more energy is lost and more vulnerable are network is to mechanical breakdowns and weather damage.
What's the Matter with Energy addresses the problems of power creation and storage and suggests simple solutions to move to local resources. Hui is able to use his experience as an inventor and educator to show that we can live comfortably lives without having to feel guilty about harming the environment. Read this book if you want to understand how we can produce power more reliably, more efficiently and ultimately cheaper for the consumer with local sources.

What The Matter With Energy A story of space time matter energy and energy conversion Joseph Hui Reviews
Joseph Hui's first book is informative, straight to the point, and wonderfully written in its simplicity. It is great as a color reference for knowledge on physics, electromagnetism, electricity and a myriad of other exciting subjects. It is full of interesting facts as well pages dedicated to Professor Hui's various inventions, for sections dedicated to the applicability of this knowledge. I highly recommend it for curious, knowledge seeking minds.
When Joe alerted me to his first book cutely entitled "What's the Matter With Energy", I had an instant love of it, I wondered what this MIT-educated genus had to say about our cosmos and existential crisis. Browsing through the pages reveals quickly three appealing features of the book. First, colorful figures and boxed concise summary of key concepts aid the readers to grasp the gist of each section. Second, the text is short with sectional titles precisely defined to the point. These two points are very typical of a rationalistic scientist. Third, his personal journey of invention is inspiring. He calls himself Solar Man. This is the part where we see an engineer's creativity takes over. I admire Hui's intellectual acumen and his down to earth scientific writing that makes complex concepts easily understandable. I highly recommend this book to be a must read for students aspiring to live an educated life that is both energetic and energetically responsible to our environment, embodying three Es Joe so eloquently articulated and advocated in the book. May the force and the Lord of all forces be with you as you take a peek at the marvelous wonder of the cosmos, with Joe as your tour guide.
What’s the Matter With Energy by Joseph Hui is a delightful book for somebody curious about science. The tone and style are captivating, like a good storyteller, and the book’s format forces it to squeeze the essentials of each topic into two pages.
Sometimes I read the entry on a single topic, and sometimes a dozen. I enjoy reading entries on topics I know well, because the story is summarized and told so well, and I enjoy learning about topics I didn’t know so well.
Hui’s knowledge of the science related to energy is truly encyclopedic, and his passion – as well as some of his own inventions – come through in a way that both enlightening and optimistic
I like science and won a handful of competitions in math, physics, chemistry. When I read this book over weekend, it reminded me of many fun stories. It’s amazingly familiar to me and so easy to grasp the content.
This book is comprehensive and well-organized. It covers knowledge that took me ten years or so to learn and experiment from middle school to my college. It has many fundamental equations, numbers, and illustrations to support scientific discussions. All these materials show that the author has spent tremendous time and effort preparing and writing the book. They make it easy for readers to follow and understand the relationship about matter and energy.
After college, we might have less opportunities to read scientific subjects in details, not mentioned exams. The book can be used as an handbook. It might help us refresh the knowledge and assist our kids’ homework assignments.
Finally, this book explains science from a very tangible perspective for most people. Education can improve energy efficiency and help discover new energy sources. We need to improve the living standard of all human beings. Only through education, can the mother nature be sustainable to the rapid growth of the world population.
Bravo on the great work!
The book is as creative and intuitive as the naming of the book. This book teaches not just concepts. It dwells into applications and more so the motivation of the scientists and engineers who made the discoveries. For example, Professor Hui told the story of how Tesla saw in vivid visions the invention of 3 phase alternating current. The book has many interesting stories about great inventors, such as how Goddard was inspired to be the inventor of over 200 patents on rockets.
The book is very pictorial and helps to easily grasp complex content. The writer has a unique way to explain simple equations such as F=Ma, and E=Mc^2 with pictures, making understanding of forbidding equations easy to grasp. The book boils the essence of these equations into simple concepts and colorful illustrations.
The book provides a framework of energy divided into 5 wonderlands of motion, electricity, optics, chemical and heat. These wonderlands contain not just the wonderful inventions of great inventors such as Archimedes, but also the latest inventions of Hui that will have profound impact on the world. As Solar Man admonishes, his invention will help. I highly recommend the book as a must read for high school and college students, as well as entrepreneurs in the energy sector.
